The Canadian Gemmological Association (CGA) is currently accepting submissions for its 2024 Emerging Artist Design Competition.

This annual event aims to highlight the creativity and skill of students and recent graduates from jewellery design and metalsmithing programs across Canada. With cash prizes on offer for the most compelling designs, the CGA seeks to support the next generation of jewellery designers in their professional development.

    Opportunity for Recognition and Reward

Open to individuals currently enrolled in relevant Canadian post-secondary programs or those who graduated in 2019, 2020, or 2021, the competition offers a structured platform for new talent to showcase their work. The CGA has allocated prizes of $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for third place. Entries must be submitted by July 15, 2024, as per the guidelines available on the CGA website.

A Word from the CGA President

CGA President Donna Hawrelko expressed the organization’s commitment to supporting emerging talent: “As an educational and professional organization, we believe it’s crucial to showcase the talents emerging from across Canada,” said Hawrelko. She emphasized the importance of providing a stage for students to demonstrate their design abilities and creative thinking.

    Submission Details and Event Information

Interested participants are encouraged to visit the CGA website for more information on how to enter. The competition is noted for being the only one of its kind in Canada, specifically tailored to students and recent graduates of jewellery design and metalsmithing. The announcement of winners and the presentation of awards are scheduled to take place at the CGA’s annual conference, planned for late October in Vancouver, British Columbia.

    Significance for the Jewellery Sector

This competition is more than just an event; it’s a vital initiative for fostering new talent within the Canadian jewellery industry. By spotlighting up-and-coming designers, the CGA not only aids in their individual growth but also contributes to the dynamism and diversity of the sector. For industry professionals, such competitions offer a glimpse into the evolving design trends and the fresh perspectives entering the market, underscoring the importance of innovation and creativity in sustaining the industry’s growth.
