Two more attempted jewellery store thefts at Conestoga Mall in early February continue a pattern of smash-and-grab robberies in Ontario’s Waterloo Region. The incidents are similar to multiple cases reported last year, with police continuing efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Latest Incidents at Conestoga Mall
The first attempted robbery occurred on Saturday, 1 February, when six individuals entered the mall and appeared to target a jewellery store. A security officer spotted the group and intervened, prompting them to flee.
On Monday afternoon, another group of six individuals entered the mall. This time, a security guard instructed store staff to lower the security gate, causing the suspects to abandon the attempt. They fled in a waiting silver SUV.
Ongoing Theft Pattern
These incidents follow a series of similar robberies in the region over the past year. Such crimes typically involve multiple suspects acting quickly, making intervention difficult before they escape.
Waterloo Regional Police Constable Brad Hickey acknowledged the complexity of these investigations. Speaking to local media, he stated, “These investigations are very complex. They require a lot of follow-up from our investigators. A lot of them are also multi-jurisdiction, so they may be involved with other police services investigating the same individuals.”
While police suspect that the two most recent incidents may involve the same individuals, this has not been confirmed. Identifying those responsible remains a key focus of the investigation.
Appeal for Public Assistance
Authorities are encouraging members of the public to report any suspicious activity that could aid in the investigation.
“We really rely on members of the public. Anyone who has any video footage. Anyone who sees anything at the mall. If you’re suspicious of any activity, if you see individuals entering the mall wearing masks or carrying duffel bags or anything like that, we really strongly encourage members of the public to contact 911 immediately,” Hickey said.
Police advise against confronting suspects due to safety risks for staff and customers, recommending that witnesses contact emergency services instead.
Impact on the Jewellery Industry
Jewellers in the region may consider additional security measures, such as reinforced display cases, improved surveillance, and emergency response planning. Collaboration with security personnel and law enforcement remains key to reducing the risk of future incidents.
With investigations ongoing, the industry will be monitoring developments closely to assess any measures that may be introduced to address the increasing threat of organised retail theft.
