The three diamond mines in Canada’s Northwest Territories – Diavik, Gahcho Kué, and Ekati – have come together to collaborate on a pendant, with proceeds from its auction supporting local families through the Adopt-A-Family program.
Designed by Adamas Diamonds, the pendant reflects northern heritage and will be auctioned on 28 November 2024 at the MAX Awards during the Yellowknife Geoscience Forum.
Symbolism in Design and Diamonds
The pendant design, inspired by a caribou antler motif, is significant to the Indigenous and local communities of the Northwest Territories. Crafted from 18-karat white gold, the pendant features three diamonds, each sourced from one of the contributing mines: a 0.41-carat round brilliant-cut diamond from Ekati, a 0.51-carat radiant-cut diamond from Gahcho Kué, and a 0.41-carat round brilliant-cut diamond from Diavik. Appraised at over CAD $12,000, the pendant symbolises the mines’ collective focus on community and environmental support.
Voices from Industry Leaders
Leadership from each mine emphasised the pendant’s symbolic design. Matthew Breen, Chief Operating Officer of Diavik Diamond Mine, explained that the design reflects the land, culture, and wildlife of the Northwest Territories, while underscoring the mines’ focus on local support. Avischen Moodley, De Beers Canada’s Country President, highlighted the caribou motif as a connection to the region’s people and environment.
Jeff Reinson, Vice-President of Operations at Burgundy Diamond Mines, noted the pendant’s representation of northern beauty and the mines’ shared commitment to community welfare and environmental responsibility. He highlighted the pendant as a demonstration of unity within the Northwest Territories mining sector.
Charitable Impact and Community Support
Proceeds from the auction will go to the Yellowknife Community Fundraising Club’s Adopt-A-Family program, which provides essential goods and holiday gifts for families in need. Kathy Gray, a spokesperson for the MAX Awards, acknowledged the mines’ contribution, noting that the funds raised will significantly impact the programme’s ability to support families this holiday season.
