A spate of smash-and-grab robberies targeting jewellery stores across Ontario this week has resulted in numerous arrests and ongoing investigations.
The incidents, which occurred in Hamilton, Markham, and Richmond Hill, highlight significant security challenges for jewellers in the region.
Hamilton Robbery: Vehicle Used to Breach Storefront
On Thursday, 5 December, a jewellery store in Hamilton’s Ancaster neighbourhood became the target of a violent robbery. According to Hamilton police, a vehicle was reversed through the store’s front window at approximately 8:50 p.m. The suspects, armed with a gun, injured the store owner while stealing jewellery after smashing display cases.
The injured store owner was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police arrested five individuals at the scene, four of whom have been charged, including a minor. Authorities are actively seeking an additional suspect.
Markham Incident: Six Suspects Apprehended
Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, 4 December, York Regional Police responded to a robbery at a jewellery store near McCowan Road and Highway 7 in Markham. The suspects used hammers to smash display cases before fleeing the scene.
As officers approached the area, a white Honda Civic believed to be a suspect vehicle collided with another car nearby. The occupants abandoned the vehicle, leading to a brief foot chase. Four suspects were arrested at the scene, with two others later apprehended in a nearby food establishment’s washroom.
The Honda Civic was reported stolen on 10 November in Toronto. Investigators believe a second vehicle, a beige SUV, was also involved. Police are now searching for at least six additional suspects, four of whom participated in the robbery while two are believed to have acted as getaway drivers.
Richmond Hill Robbery: Employee Injured
The first robbery in the series occurred on Monday, 3 December, in Richmond Hill. A jewellery store on Yonge Street and Carrville Road was targeted by five suspects, four of whom entered the store while the fifth waited in a vehicle.
The suspects assaulted an employee and smashed display cases to steal jewellery before fleeing in a Nissan Maxima, which was later recovered by police.
Investigations Ongoing
Police investigations into all three incidents are ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to contact local law enforcement.
Security Implications for Jewellers
These incidents highlight the security challenges faced by jewellers in urban areas, including the use of vehicles to breach storefronts and the coordination among multiple suspects.
Jewellers are encouraged to review their security measures, including physical barriers, emergency response plans, and surveillance systems, to mitigate risks. Maintaining communication with local law enforcement and industry bodies can further enhance safety efforts and support preventative measures.
