RCMP Issues Warning Over Jewellery Distraction Thefts in Alberta

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has issued a warning to the public following reports of distraction thefts involving imitation jewellery. These incidents, which have occurred in various locations across Alberta, involve individuals offering fake gold items in exchange for money, using the interaction as an opportunity to steal valuables from victims.

    Theft Pattern Targets Public Areas

According to the RCMP, the scams typically take place in public spaces such as shopping centre car parks, petrol stations, and other high-traffic areas. Offenders often claim to be in financial difficulty and offer what appears to be gold jewellery in return for cash. In some instances, suspects have placed items directly on victims, potentially as a method of distraction.

Victims have reported the theft of genuine jewellery, wallets, and other personal belongings during these encounters. The RCMP notes that similar cases have been reported in multiple locations, indicating a broader trend.

    Public Safety Advice

In response, the RCMP has advised the public to take the following precautions:

    • Be cautious when approached by strangers with urgent stories involving money or valuables.
    • Avoid engaging in jewellery or cash exchanges with unknown individuals.
    • Do not allow others to place jewellery or objects on you.
    • Keep personal items close and remain aware of your surroundings.
    • If you feel pressured or unsafe, leave the area and seek help if needed.

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of this type of scam is encouraged to report it by calling 911. Information about such incidents can also be shared with local police detachments. Anonymous tips can be submitted via Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com, or through the “P3 Tips” mobile app.
